Compare the trip, not the marketing total
The French Riviera Pass sounds like an excellent idea. Buy one ticket, visit famous museums and villas, enjoy a few activities, and save money along the way. But there's an important question if you're staying in Menton rather than Nice. Does the pass still save money after you include travel from Menton, the time spent between attractions and the cheaper tickets you could buy separately? Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't come close.
A €30 pass can make sense for a concentrated programme of genuinely valuable included activities. But it is a poor purchase for two historic villas with a €24 combined ticket, or for a short perfume workshop sold directly for €18. And a 72-hour pass doesn't necessarily make sense because your holiday lasts three days. Let's compare realistic trips, using Menton as the starting point.
1. What is the French Riviera Pass?
The French Riviera Pass is the official sightseeing pass offered by the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolitan Tourist Office. It provides one-time access to a selection of more than 60 attractions and activities across Nice and the surrounding Riviera. Its current all-inclusive prices are:
The pass is delivered digitally as an e-ticket. Validity begins on first use. If you enter an attraction at 11 a.m. on Monday with a 24-hour pass, it remains valid until 11 a.m. on Tuesday. You can normally visit each included attraction once, not repeatedly. Certain activities require advance booking and may have age, seasonal or capacity restrictions.
What isn't included?
This is the most important limitation for visitors based in Menton. Ordinary public transport is not included. You must separately pay for regional TER trains, local buses and trams unless you already hold another eligible ticket or transport pass. The French Riviera Pass does include certain tourist transport experiences, including the Nice Le Grand Tour sightseeing bus and Nice's tourist train, but these are not substitutes for the regional railway.
The pass is also not the same product as Pass SudAzur Explore, which is primarily a regional public-transport pass.
| Pass | Price | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| 24-hour pass | €30 | 24 consecutive hours |
| 48-hour pass | €45 | 48 consecutive hours |
| 72-hour pass | €65 | 72 consecutive hours |
2. A realistic price comparison
Here's what several popular outings look like using the current published entrance charges.
The first lesson is that comparing full individual prices is not enough. You should also compare available combined admissions and special museum passes. A sightseeing pass may be less attractive than it initially appears when cheaper alternatives already exist.
| Activity | Individual adult price | French Riviera Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Villa Kérylos | €15 | Included |
| Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild | €18 | Included |
| Combined Kérylos + Ephrussi ticket | €24 for both | Not needed if using pass |
| Musée Matisse Nice | €10 | Included |
| Nice municipal museums, four-day pass | €15 | Alternative to French Riviera Pass |
| Galimard Pause Cologne, Èze | €18 direct provider price | Specific Pause Cologne offer included |
| Nice Le Grand Tour sightseeing bus | Verify standalone price for dates | Included 24-hour use |
| Monaco Oceanographic Museum | Price depends on visit date | Included entry |
3. Scenario one: two beautiful Riviera villas in one day
Route: Menton → Beaulieu-sur-Mer → Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat → Menton Attractions: Villa Kérylos and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild Time needed: Approximately 6–8 hours including transport and visits This is one of the most appealing cultural outings from Menton. Villa Kérylos is a remarkable reconstruction of an ancient Greek residence, overlooking the sea in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild offers elaborate interiors and extraordinary themed gardens on Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Both are included in the French Riviera Pass. At first glance, the arithmetic appears straightforward.
€15 + €18 = €33. A €30 pass would save €3. Except there's a better option.
The combined villa ticket
The two properties offer an official combined admission costing €24 for an adult, valid for eight days from purchase. Ephrussi lists it as an on-site purchase; check the ticket-office conditions rather than assuming it can be bought online. You don't need to visit both properties on the same day. That's an important advantage if you enjoy gardens and don't want to rush.
The real comparison
Result: buying the pass costs €6 more per adult. For two adults, that's €12 more before considering transport.
What about the journey?
From Menton, take the TER towards Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Villa Kérylos is within walking distance of the station, but check the current pedestrian approach before travelling; temporary access restrictions can change. Villa Ephrussi is farther away on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula and requires additional walking or a local bus connection. Allow around 60–90 minutes at Kérylos and 2–3 hours at Ephrussi, especially if you enjoy gardens. You'll also need time for lunch and transfers.
Verdict
Don't buy a French Riviera Pass solely for these two villas. Choose the combined €24 admission instead. It's cheaper and gives you eight days to organise the visits rather than forcing both into one continuous pass period.
| Expense | Separate combined ticket | French Riviera Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Villa Kérylos + Villa Ephrussi | €24 | Included |
| Pass | €0 | €30 |
| Transport from Menton | Extra | Extra |
| Attraction cost | €24 | €30 |

4. Scenario two: a relaxed museum day in Nice
Route: Menton → Nice → Menton Attractions: Musée Matisse and another municipal museum Time needed: Approximately 6–8 hours including travel, local transport and a meal Nice offers an excellent selection of art and history museums. You could spend the morning at Musée Matisse in Cimiez, then visit another municipal collection later in the day. Both types of visit are included in the French Riviera Pass. But Nice already operates a particularly good museum ticket.
Nice Museums Pass
The city offers a four-day municipal museum pass for €15. It covers its participating municipal museums and galleries. That's less than half the price of a 24-hour French Riviera Pass.
The cost comparison
The return TER figure uses SNCF's published standard one-way Menton–Nice fare of €7.70.
What about timing?
The TER journey averages approximately 40 minutes. Then you still have to reach the museum. Musée Matisse is in Cimiez, away from the central railway station. Allow time for a local bus connection or another suitable route. A museum visit can take 1–2 hours. If you add another attraction, lunch and the return journey, you're already looking at a substantial day.
Verdict
For a conventional municipal-museum day, the Nice Museums Pass is the better choice. French Riviera Pass becomes more interesting only if you add genuinely valuable activities outside the municipal museum scheme.
| Expense | Nice Museums Pass | French Riviera Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Museums | €15 for four days | Included |
| French Riviera Pass | Not needed | €30 |
| Return TER Menton–Nice | €15.40 | €15.40 |

5. Scenario three: a perfume workshop in Èze
Route: Menton → Èze-Village → Menton Activity: Galimard's specific Pause Cologne experience Time needed: Allow approximately half a day with transport, the appointment and time in the village. This is an editorial estimate, not a confirmed connection. The official pass listings include Galimard's Pause Cologne, not every perfume workshop sold by the company. This distinction changes the financial result.
A price discrepancy worth noticing
The pass website advertises a Galimard workshop value of €58. However, Galimard's own Èze visitor page and linked booking page list Pause Cologne at €18 per creation, including a 15 ml Eau de Cologne. The factory-museum visit alone is free. For a like-for-like comparison, this guide uses the provider's €18 price, not the higher marketing value. Do not confuse the short Cologne introduction in Èze with longer perfume-creation courses, including those in Grasse.
Result: the pass costs €12 more per adult for this workshop alone. Another included activity could change the total, but only count one you genuinely want to do.
Confirm the exact experience
Before buying, check the included workshop, date, available places, language, minimum age and reservation conditions. Galimard's booking page recommends reservations and requires at least two creations for an online booking; tourism listings describe different walk-in and age conditions. Confirm the applicable pass-holder arrangements with the venue rather than treating a listing as a guaranteed appointment. The provider advertises participation from age five, while a tourism listing says six. Families should confirm the child's eligibility directly. These are unresolved source differences, not interchangeable age guarantees.
The practical journey
The venue is on Place Charles de Gaulle in Èze-Village. Èze-Village and Èze-sur-Mer station are different destinations. A coastal train does not leave you beside the hilltop workshop. Check the final bus or walking connection, the last return and whether the timing suits your group.
Verdict
Buy the workshop directly if it is your only paid activity. Buy a pass only after the complete, like-for-like programme beats the cheapest valid separate tickets.
| Expense | Without pass | With 24-hour pass |

6. Scenario four: Monaco for one major attraction
Route: Menton → Monaco → Menton Main attraction: Oceanographic Museum of Monaco Time needed: Approximately 4–6 hours including travel and sightseeing Monaco is one of the easiest day trips from Menton. The TER journey is short, and the Oceanographic Museum is one of the region's major cultural attractions. The museum is included in the French Riviera Pass. However, admission prices can vary by date and visitor category.
How to calculate this trip
A 24-hour French Riviera Pass costs €30. A standard return TER ticket from Menton to Monaco costs €8.20, based on SNCF's published €4.10 one-way fare. That means the pass itinerary costs at least €38.20 before any other paid local transport or extras. Without the pass, the cost is the museum's actual admission price on your date plus the same €8.20 train fare.
What makes the pass worthwhile?
If your standalone museum ticket is below €30, buying the 24-hour pass solely for that one museum won't save money. You would need another included activity that you genuinely wanted to do. Walking around Monaco-Ville, visiting the harbour or admiring the outside of the Prince's Palace does not create additional pass savings if those activities are free.
Verdict
Don't purchase French Riviera Pass automatically for a single Monaco museum visit. Check the actual museum price and compare it with €30. The short journey makes Monaco attractive from Menton, but it doesn't make an unnecessary pass financially worthwhile.

7. Scenario five: two days of historic villas and Nice culture
Route: Menton → Beaulieu-sur-Mer / Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat → Nice → Menton Duration: Two days Attractions: Villa Kérylos, Villa Ephrussi, Musée Matisse This itinerary connects three excellent cultural attractions. It also matches the interests of visitors exploring the region's historic houses and artistic heritage.
Individual ticket alternatives
Villa Kérylos and Villa Ephrussi combined: €24. Musée Matisse: €10. Total admissions: €34. The French Riviera Pass for 48 hours costs €45.
Comparison
Result: the 48-hour pass costs €11 more. The regional transport expenses are additional in either case.
Time considerations
On the first day, allow a substantial part of the day for the two villas and their connection. On the second, visit Musée Matisse and enjoy the surrounding Cimiez district. There's no need to add extra attractions just to justify a pass you've already bought.
Verdict
For this cultural itinerary, separate admissions are better value. This is an especially good example of why a beautiful multi-day itinerary doesn't automatically justify a multi-day sightseeing pass.
| Expense | Separate tickets | 48-hour pass |
|---|---|---|
| Kérylos + Ephrussi | €24 | Included |
| Musée Matisse | €10 | Included |
| Pass | €0 | €45 |
| Admissions total | €34 | €45 |
| Travel from Menton | Extra | Extra |
8. Scenario six: a fuller three-day Riviera experience
Duration: Three consecutive days Possible activities: Pause Cologne in Èze on day one; Villa Kérylos and Villa Ephrussi on day two; Musée Matisse in Nice on day three. This is an appealing programme, but it is not automatically a good candidate for a 72-hour pass. The exact workshop price is decisive.
The corrected calculation
The pass costs €13 more per adult, excluding transport. Using the pass website's €58 workshop value would incorrectly suggest €92 of admissions and a €27 saving. The provider sells the specific included short experience for €18, so that is not a sound saving claim.
The itinerary
Day one: Travel to Èze for the confirmed workshop. Leave the rest of the day flexible and allow for the connection to the village. Day two: Visit Kérylos and Villa Ephrussi. The two villas and their transfer can comfortably occupy a full day, including lunch and gardens. Day three: Travel to Nice for Musée Matisse and a relaxed visit to Cimiez. Check museum closing days before assigning dates.
The programme is achievable in principle, but it involves several separate journeys from Menton. Transport is additional in both comparisons, and every pass visit must fit inside the consecutive validity window.
Verdict
For these four visits, separate admissions are cheaper and allow more flexibility. A 72-hour pass needs other confirmed, worthwhile included activities to become competitive. Do not add visits merely to recover a sunk pass cost; weigh travel, opening hours and how much sightseeing you actually enjoy.
| Expense | Individual tickets | 72-hour pass |
|---|---|---|
| Galimard Pause Cologne | €18 | Included |
| Combined Kérylos + Ephrussi | €24 | Included |
| Musée Matisse | €10 | Included |
| Attractions total | €52 | €65 |
9. All six itineraries compared
These figures are for one adult. They exclude transport because most transport costs are the same whether or not you buy French Riviera Pass. That doesn't mean transport is unimportant. It means transport needs to be calculated separately from the amount actually saved by the pass.
| Itinerary | Best alternative cost, attractions only | Pass price | Financial result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two villas | €24 | €30 / 24h | Pass costs €6 more |
| Nice municipal museums | €15 | €30 / 24h | Pass costs €15 more |
| Galimard Pause Cologne | €18 | €30 / 24h | Pass costs €12 more |
| Monaco Oceanographic Museum only | Date-dependent | €30 / 24h | Check actual admission |
| Two villas + Matisse | €34 | €45 / 48h | Pass costs €11 more |
| Three-day villa, museum and workshop programme | €52 | €65 / 72h | Pass costs €13 more |
10. What does transport really add from Menton?
For visitors based in Menton, train fares are one of the most predictable additional expenses.
Confirmed standard TER fares
These are SNCF’s published standard adult fares checked on 2 November 2026. Discount cards, group fares and other regional products can reduce the cost. For Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Èze and other intermediate stations, check the precise fare for your chosen departure and destination. Don't calculate an all-inclusive travel budget by substituting the Nice fare for every station.
Local buses and trams
The French Riviera Pass doesn't include ordinary local transport. For Nice, the official pass FAQ currently lists optional Lignes d'Azur passes at:
€7 for one day.
€13 for two days.
€20 for seven days.
These are separate transport products. A single journey ticket may be cheaper if you only need one or two rides.
What about Pass SudAzur Explore?
If you're planning several regional excursions from Menton, look separately at Pass SudAzur Explore. Its advertised three-day adult price is €35, with longer durations also available. It covers participating regional public transport networks, including eligible rail travel across Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco. However, it's a transport pass, not a replacement for admission tickets to museums and villas. Some visitors may benefit from buying both products, but only if the numbers justify it.
| Journey | One-way | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Menton–Nice | €7.70 | €15.40 |
| Menton–Monaco | €4.10 | €8.20 |

11. Why staying in Menton changes the calculation
Someone staying in central Nice can often visit several nearby attractions without travelling far. A visitor staying in Menton has a different starting point. A day in Nice includes the journey to the station, the train, local connections, the museum visit, lunch and the return. A day visiting villas on Cap Ferrat has its own final transport and walking requirements. And a workshop in Èze might require advance reservations and a connection beyond the coastal railway.
The pass rewards concentrated sightseeing
French Riviera Pass is most effective when you're visiting several paid attractions within a limited period. But Menton is also a place where visitors often prefer a slower rhythm. You might spend the morning at the covered market, walk along Promenade du Soleil and visit Monaco the following afternoon. That doesn't produce much value from an attraction pass.
The practical question
Would you still choose all these activities if you weren't trying to recover the cost of a pass? If the answer is no, the pass may be encouraging unnecessary spending rather than saving money.
12. Families: calculate each ticket separately
The French Riviera Pass is sold at a single standard price rather than offering an automatic lower-priced child version. But many attractions offer reduced or free admission to younger visitors. For example:
Villa Kérylos offers free entry to children under seven and reduced tickets for ages 7–17.
Villa Ephrussi offers reduced tickets for ages 7–17.
Nice's municipal museums provide free admission to children under 18 under the published rules.
That changes the economics significantly. An adult might save money using the pass while their child would spend more.
Our recommendation for families
Calculate the adult and child admissions separately. Don't automatically buy the same pass for every family member. Use the official French Riviera Pass savings calculator with the children's actual ages and desired activities. Age restrictions also apply to certain included experiences, so confirm whether a workshop or activity is genuinely suitable.
13. How to calculate whether the pass is worth buying
Use this formula: Your actual saving = the cheapest valid individual tickets for your planned activities − the price of the French Riviera Pass. When comparing different routes, include any transport costs that differ. The word cheapest is important. If two attractions offer a €24 combined ticket, don't compare the pass against their €33 combined standard single-ticket price. Likewise, if you qualify for a reduced museum ticket, use that reduced rate.
A practical five-step method
Choose the attractions you genuinely want to visit.
Confirm they're included in the current French Riviera Pass.
Find their ordinary tickets, combined offers and reduced rates.
Check opening hours, bookings, travel time and realistic connections.
Compare the total with the 24-, 48- or 72-hour pass.
Don't include activities merely because they're free with the pass. They should be activities you would otherwise be willing to purchase.
14. Mistakes that make the pass less valuable
Buying it before confirming availability
Some workshops and guided tours require reservations. Being listed as included doesn't guarantee an available place at your preferred time.
Forgetting the journey from Menton
A €30 pass doesn't cover your TER ticket to Nice or Monaco.
Ignoring combined admission tickets
This is particularly important for Villa Kérylos and Villa Ephrussi.
Paying for free experiences indirectly
A free waterfront walk, public garden or view from a promenade doesn't become financially valuable simply because it appears near a paid attraction.
Booking too much in one day
Travel time, lunch, queues and opening hours all limit what can comfortably fit into a day. If a pass makes you feel obliged to visit five museums when you'd genuinely enjoy two, it's probably the wrong choice.
Forgetting the 24-hour clock
The pass is valid for consecutive hours after first use. But that doesn't mean every attraction is open around the clock. A museum may close at 5 p.m. even when your pass remains valid until the following morning.
Frequently asked questions
Is the French Riviera Pass worth buying if I stay in Menton?
Sometimes. It is most useful for higher-priced included activities and several confirmed visits, but none of the fixed-price example programmes here beats the cheapest separate tickets. For quieter sightseeing or trips focused on municipal museums and historic villas, cheaper individual or combined tickets may exist.
Does the French Riviera Pass include trains from Menton?
No. Ordinary regional trains, buses and trams are not included.
How much does the French Riviera Pass cost?
The current all-inclusive passes cost €30 for 24 hours, €45 for 48 hours and €65 for 72 hours.
Is Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild included?
Yes. But when combining Ephrussi with Villa Kérylos, compare the €24 combined admission before buying a pass.
Is the Monaco Oceanographic Museum included?
Yes. Compare the museum's date-specific adult admission with the pass price and any other activities you plan.
Can I use the pass on consecutive days?
Yes. Its validity is measured in consecutive hours beginning with first use.
Can I visit the same museum twice?
Normally no. Each included site or experience can be used once per pass.
Is there a child discount?
The French Riviera Pass has a standard price. Calculate separately because individual attractions may offer free or reduced child admission.
Is the Nice Museums Pass better?
For visiting only Nice municipal museums, the €15 four-day museum pass is often considerably better value.
Can I combine a French Riviera Pass with a transport pass?
Yes, where their terms allow. But check whether the resulting total is cheaper than purchasing only the tickets you need.
Final thoughts: don't buy the pass until you've chosen the trip
The French Riviera Pass can be an excellent sightseeing product. But it isn't automatically the cheapest way to explore the region from Menton. A programme containing several genuinely higher-value included activities may produce savings. The short Pause Cologne workshop alone does not: its provider price is €18. For a relaxed day visiting two historic villas, the official combined ticket is cheaper. For Nice's municipal museums, the city's own museum pass often makes more sense.
And for a short Monaco visit focused on walking and one museum, buying individual tickets may be perfectly adequate. Choose your experiences first. Calculate the tickets second. Buy the pass only if the result genuinely saves money. That way, your holiday remains organised around the places you want to see, rather than the need to justify something you've already purchased.
