Best day trips from Menton: Monaco, Nice and the Italian Riviera

Menton makes a calm base for Monaco, Nice, hilltop villages and the Italian Riviera: spend the day out, then return to a quieter seafront apartment.

Return to a calmer seafront base

Menton makes a good base for day trips: you can spend the day in Monaco, Nice or Italy, then come back to a quieter seafront apartment in the evening. Most of the ideas below work without a car if you use trains and buses.

The rhythm is simple: choose one main destination, check the current return options before leaving, and keep enough energy for a late swim or slow dinner back in Menton.

Monaco: harbour views and bright nights

Monaco is the easiest day trip from Menton, with frequent TER trains and buses often taking around 15-25 minutes depending on the service. A simple plan is to start in Monaco-Ville, the Rock, for views over Port Hercules, the palace area and cathedral.

Then walk down to the harbour and finish in the Casino district for architecture, gardens and people-watching. Even if you do not go inside the casino, the square gives you classic Monaco images.

If you stay into the evening, Monaco gives livelier nightlife than Menton, from harbour bars to famous spots such as La Rascasse with live music and DJs. Check current programmes and last return options, then come back to quieter Menton to sleep.

Nice: big-city Riviera for a day

Nice is farther away but still easy by direct train from Menton, with journeys usually around 40-50 minutes. Spend the morning in Vieux Nice and around Cours Saleya, where narrow lanes, churches and cafe terraces feel more urban and lively than Menton.

In the afternoon, walk or cycle along Promenade des Anglais, climb Colline du Château for panoramic views over Baie des Anges, then choose between a beach stop or museums depending on your interests.

If you want one bigger night out during your stay, Nice has the densest bar and nightlife scene in the area. You can still return to Menton the same evening if you check last trains and keep a taxi or ride-hailing option as backup.

Hilltop villages: Èze and the mountains above Menton

For a change of scenery, combine the coast with a hilltop village. Èze is the classic choice between Nice and Monaco: reach Èze-sur-Mer by train, then check the current bus or taxi options up to Èze-Village for steep lanes, stone houses and wide sea views.

Closer to Menton, villages such as Sainte-Agnès or Gorbio offer even more dramatic balcony-style views over sea and mountains, with a quieter, almost Alpine feel. They work best with a car or carefully checked bus times, especially for the return.

These villages are good if you want to pair one city day with one slower day in the hills, rather than spending every excursion on the coast.

Italian Riviera: Ventimiglia, Bordighera and Sanremo

Heading east from Menton, the train crosses into Italy and opens up a chain of Ligurian towns. Ventimiglia is the closest and easiest, especially on market days, when the town is busy and its food market is useful for Italian produce, pasta and focaccia.

Farther along the line, Bordighera and Sanremo offer promenades, beaches, old streets and a different architectural rhythm from the French side. Choose one town for a focused day or combine two shorter stops if you are comfortable with the train schedule.

For most guests, Italy works best as a food-and-walk day: coffee, market or old streets, a pasta or seafood lunch, then a train back to Menton for an easy evening.

Short boat trips and coastal views

Depending on the season, boat excursions may run from nearby ports, giving a chance to see Menton, Cap Martin and Monaco from the sea. Treat them as optional and check current availability locally, because programmes change with weather and season.

If you prefer to keep things simple, the Menton-Monaco-Nice train line can work like a moving balcony: sit by the window, choose one or two stops, and enjoy the sea views between stations without over-planning.

How to choose and plan

For most first-time visitors, three classic day trips already make a strong combination: one day in Monaco, one in Nice and one in Italy, such as Ventimiglia or Bordighera. All are reachable by TER train from Menton, so you do not need a car.

Check train and bus timetables close to your travel date, especially on Sundays, public holidays and major event weekends such as the Monaco Grand Prix or Nice festivals. If a day feels too full, shorten it and come back for a late afternoon swim on Menton's beaches.
