Menton to Monaco
Often one of the simplest options, especially during busy event periods.

Plan the evening before midnight
Spending New Year's Eve in Menton is a little different from celebrating in a major European capital.
You can enjoy a special dinner, walk past palm trees decorated with Christmas lights and welcome the new year with the Mediterranean just a few steps away.
There are no enormous distances to cover if you're staying centrally, and there's something rather appealing about starting 1 January with coffee and a peaceful walk beside the sea.
But a successful New Year's trip requires more planning than an ordinary weekend.
Restaurants may offer fixed festive menus instead of their usual à la carte selection. Shops can close early on 31 December. Public transport after midnight is not guaranteed, and a Christmas market being open during the holidays doesn't necessarily mean it will host a midnight celebration.
This guide focuses on the practical choices: where to have dinner, what to buy beforehand, how to spend midnight and how to return safely to your accommodation.
It also explains which New Year's Eve 2026/27 events are confirmed and which programmes are still awaiting official announcements.
New Year's Eve in Menton: what is confirmed?
The most important distinction is between an event that has been officially scheduled and one that traditionally takes place.
Don't rely on an old programme simply because it appears under a current search result.
| Activity | Status as of 6 November 2026 | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Eve restaurant dinners in Menton | Individual 2026 menus still need verification | Reserve only against a confirmed 31 December offer |
| Menton Christmas Village | Municipal plans published for 4 Dec–3 Jan | No confirmed midnight programme |
| Public fireworks in Menton | Not confirmed | Don't plan around a fireworks display |
| Monaco Christmas Village | Dates and late opening confirmed | Open until 02:30 on New Year's night |
| Monaco midnight fireworks for 2027 | Not confirmed | Previous year's programme is not evidence |
| Trains after midnight | Special 2026/27 timetable not confirmed | Arrange an independent return plan |
| New Year's Day public holiday | Confirmed | Friday, 1 January 2027 |
| Menton New Year's Day concert | 2027 programme not confirmed | Previous editions aren't guaranteed to repeat |
1. Choose the kind of New Year's Eve you actually want
There are three practical ways to celebrate.
Option A: Restaurant dinner in Menton
Best for couples, friends and visitors who want a special meal without spending the evening cooking.
Book a restaurant within a comfortable walking distance of your accommodation.
Confirm the menu, start time, price and whether the dinner continues until midnight.
Afterwards, you may be able to enjoy a short walk along the seafront before returning home.
This is our preferred option if dining out is the main celebration.
Option B: A festive dinner in your apartment
Best for families, groups, longer stays and visitors who prefer a private celebration.
Shop beforehand, prepare a good meal, enjoy the evening at your own pace and decide whether to go out for a short midnight walk.
It's more flexible than a restaurant reservation, particularly with babies or young children.
And it's possible to make the evening feel special without preparing an elaborate multi-course dinner.
Option C: Celebrate outside Menton
Best for visitors who actively want a larger public celebration.
Monaco has confirmed extended Christmas Village opening on 31 December 2026, making it a potential alternative.
However, getting back to Menton after midnight is a separate problem.
Unless you have a confirmed return service, prearranged transport or accommodation nearby, don't build your evening around a late-night event outside town.
2. Booking a New Year's Eve restaurant in Menton
The French term to look for is Réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre.
On 31 December, many restaurants operate differently from an ordinary evening.
Some offer a fixed multi-course menu. Others organise a dinner with music or entertainment. A few may close entirely.
A restaurant that's normally open on Thursday isn't necessarily offering its usual menu on Thursday, 31 December 2026.
What should you check?
Where should you look?
Begin with restaurants you'd genuinely enjoy on an ordinary evening.
Then check whether they have published a specific 2026 New Year's menu.
Hotel restaurants may also offer special festive dinners.
For example, Le Méditerranée at Hôtel Méditerranée has previously published dedicated Christmas and New Year's menus. However, the publicly accessible detailed programme we located relates to the 2025 festive season, not a verified 2026 Réveillon reservation.
It is therefore worth checking, but should not be treated as a confirmed current offer.
Hôtel Méditerranée official website
How early should you book?
If you have a particular restaurant in mind, make an enquiry well before 31 December.
For popular restaurants, a special occasion table may be difficult to arrange at the last minute.
Don't book accommodation based on an assumed restaurant place. Confirm the dinner independently.
What if you don't want a formal gala dinner?
Ask whether the restaurant offers a shorter early seating or a more relaxed festive meal.
Another possibility is to enjoy a substantial lunch on 31 December and celebrate privately in the evening.
A memorable New Year's Eve doesn't have to involve a five-hour dinner.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is there a special Réveillon menu? | The regular menu may not be available |
| What's the total price per person? | Festive meals can cost substantially more |
| Are drinks included? | Wine, Champagne and water may be extra |
| What time does dinner begin? | A late seating may not suit families |
| Does the evening include midnight? | Not every restaurant stays open until midnight |
| Is a deposit required? | Festive bookings often have stricter conditions |
| Can dietary requirements be accommodated? | Fixed menus offer less flexibility |
| Are children welcome? | Some evenings are more adult-oriented |
| Is there a cancellation deadline? | Refund terms may be restrictive |
3. A New Year's Eve dinner in your apartment
If you're staying in Menton for several nights, an apartment offers a particularly practical alternative.
You can prepare familiar food, choose your own dinner time and avoid relying on transport or restaurant availability late at night.
This doesn't mean spending the entire day cooking.
A simple Mediterranean festive menu
To start
Olives, tapenade, good bread, cheese and seasonal vegetables.
Main course
Fresh pasta, seafood or a prepared dish from a local food shop.
Sides
A Mediterranean salad and roasted vegetables.
Dessert
A lemon tart or other pastry from a bakery.
For midnight
Champagne, sparkling wine or a non-alcoholic alternative, with fruit and small desserts.
Buy prepared elements where practical.
The idea is to assemble an enjoyable dinner rather than recreate a restaurant kitchen.
What does it cost?
As an illustrative shopping allowance, consider approximately €25–45 per adult for a generous home-prepared festive meal, excluding premium alcohol.
A more elaborate seafood or speciality-food menu may cost considerably more.
These are budgeting estimates, not published package prices from a specific shop.
Don't forget the equipment
Before planning a complicated meal, check whether your apartment actually has:
An oven or suitable hob.
Adequate pots, pans and utensils.
Enough plates and glasses.
A refrigerator large enough for your shopping.
A dining table suitable for the group.
If your kitchen is limited, choose a cold platter, fresh pasta or another simple option.
A holiday apartment dinner should feel easier than a normal working day.
4. Where and when to shop for New Year's Eve
This is the part of the trip that benefits most from planning.
31 December isn't a French national public holiday, but shops can use exceptional opening hours.
And 1 January 2027 is a public holiday, when many businesses may be closed or operating reduced schedules.
Menton's covered market
Les Halles, Quai de Monléon
The municipal covered market is normally open every morning and offers local produce, cheeses, vegetables, prepared foods and other ingredients.
However, its standard daily schedule doesn't guarantee that every trader will open on 31 December or 1 January.
Check individual availability if you're depending on a particular product.
Our recommendation is to buy the important parts of your festive meal on 30 December, then use the morning of the 31st only for fresh bread or any final purchases.
Supermarkets
Menton has Carrefour City branches and larger supermarkets offering everyday essentials.
Useful central locations include:
Carrefour City, 35 Avenue Félix Faure.
Carrefour City, 6 Avenue de Thiers.
Carrefour City, 25–27 Avenue de Sospel.
Carrefour City, 7 Rue Amiral Courbet.
These stores publish ordinary weekly opening hours through Carrefour's official branch pages.
But the 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 exceptional schedules have not yet been verified.
Don't interpret a normal closing time of 10 p.m. as permission to shop at 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
Check Carrefour branches in Menton.
The most practical shopping timetable
29 December: Confirm the apartment's kitchen equipment and plan the dinner.
30 December: Buy groceries, drinks, desserts and essential household supplies.
31 December morning: Collect fresh bread, pastries or preordered products.
31 December afternoon: Prepare food, rest and get ready for the evening.
1 January: Use your existing supplies rather than relying on supermarkets being open.
This approach leaves you free to enjoy the last day of the year instead of spending it looking for an open shop.

5. What is happening in Menton on 31 December 2026?
As of the 6 November research check, a complete official programme for New Year's Eve 2026/27 in Menton has not been published.
That means we cannot confirm a municipal midnight concert, public countdown or fireworks display.
What is planned for the festive season?
The City of Menton has published a call for operators for a Christmas Village from 4 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, at Esplanade Élisée Reclus near Plage du Borrigo.
The proposal includes five food chalets and spaces for three amusement attractions, with a stated public opening schedule of 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
This is evidence of the municipality's planned festive installation, not a confirmed entertainment programme for 31 December.
It also shouldn't be confused with the previous season's Christmas Village around Mail du Bastion, whose locations, programme and timetable may differ.
What about the midnight countdown?
There is currently no verified official announcement of an organised public midnight countdown in Menton for the arrival of 2027.
Residents and visitors may naturally gather outdoors, but that isn't the same as an official programmed event.
What about fireworks?
Don't assume there will be a municipal display.
If fireworks are important to your plans, check for a dated municipal announcement specifically referring to 31 December 2026 or 1 January 2027.
Until then, treat fireworks as unconfirmed.
A reliable alternative
Even without a major organised event, Menton remains attractive for a short evening walk.
Promenade du Soleil and the lower waterfront offer a beautiful Mediterranean setting.
Check weather conditions, temporary restrictions and your return route, particularly if you intend to go out close to midnight.
6. Spending midnight in Menton
You don't necessarily need a ticketed party to enjoy the final minutes of the year.
A quiet Mediterranean midnight
Finish dinner in your apartment.
Dress for the weather, which may be cool and windy beside the water.
Take a short walk along the promenade if conditions are suitable.
Enjoy the atmosphere, then return home on foot.
This is particularly attractive for couples who want a private celebration with a little sense of occasion.
With children
For babies and younger children, preserving a comfortable sleep routine may be more enjoyable than staying outside until midnight.
You could celebrate earlier with a special dinner, festive decorations and a family photograph.
Older children and teenagers may enjoy staying up, but choose a familiar walking route and agree on the plan beforehand.
Safety around midnight
Avoid crowded road crossings and areas where people are using fireworks irresponsibly.
Don't rely on unsupervised swimming, unfamiliar rocky coastlines or remote viewpoints after dark.
Use public walkways, check temporary restrictions and respect local residents.
You can make the evening memorable without travelling far from your accommodation.

7. Should you go to Monaco for midnight?
Monaco offers the clearest confirmed nearby festive venue at this stage.
The municipality has confirmed that its Christmas Village at Quai Albert Ier, Port Hercule, will be open on 31 December 2026 from 11 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. on 1 January 2027.
Last entry is scheduled for 2 a.m.
The 2026 theme is La forêt enchantée, or The Enchanted Forest.
What is confirmed?
The Christmas Village, food stalls and amusement attractions are covered by published municipal operating rules.
What isn't confirmed?
The full New Year's Eve entertainment schedule and a midnight fireworks display for the arrival of 2027.
Monaco's dedicated 31 December page currently says that 2026 information is still to come; archive pages describing celebrations to welcome 2026 are not the programme for welcoming 2027.
That page should not be used as proof of what will happen one year later.
The return journey matters more than the distance
Monaco is close to Menton by train.
But a short daytime journey doesn't guarantee transport after midnight.
Before deciding to celebrate there, confirm a specific return service or arrange an alternative.
If you can't do that, enjoy the Christmas Village earlier in the evening and return to Menton before your planned dinner or midnight celebration.

8. Transport after midnight: what is actually known?
This deserves a clear answer.
We could not verify a published special overnight train timetable for the night of 31 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 on the Menton–Monaco–Nice corridor.
Ordinary timetable summaries are not sufficient evidence of a special New Year's night service.
Trains
SNCF's current dedicated works page lists disruption until 10 December 2027, generally Sunday to Thursday nights from 22:00 to 06:00. Thursday 31 December 2026 falls within that general pattern; this is not confirmation of the holiday-specific service. Check the exact night and replacement arrangements before booking an evening outside Menton.
However, the end of that scheduled work programme does not prove that special services will operate after midnight on New Year's Eve.
Check your exact journey through SNCF Connect or TER Sud once the holiday timetable is available.
Buses
Local and regional buses may operate under reduced or special holiday schedules.
Don't assume that a normal evening bus will run at 1 a.m. on New Year's Day.
Confirm with Zest, ZOU! or Monaco's CAM network, depending on your route.
Taxis and private transfers
If you plan to stay in Monaco or Nice past midnight, prearrange transport where possible.
Confirm the pickup location, time, total fare and cancellation conditions.
Availability can be limited at busy holiday times.
Driving
If you drive, designate a driver who will not drink alcohol.
Check parking, traffic restrictions and any event road closures.
Our recommendation
For visitors staying in Menton who want to celebrate at midnight without transport worries, choose a restaurant or apartment within walking distance.
It's the simplest way to enjoy the night without making the final hour dependent on an uncertain timetable.

9. A relaxed New Year's Day: 1 January 2027
The first day of the year is a public holiday in France.
It's worth treating it as a slow day rather than expecting the same schedule as a normal Friday.
Morning: no rush
Make breakfast in the apartment.
If the weather is pleasant, enjoy a walk along the seafront.
Menton's winter light can be beautiful, particularly on clear days.
Late morning: waterfront and gardens
Walk through Jardins Biovès or along Promenade du Soleil, subject to any temporary festive installations.
Explore the lower pedestrian streets and the exterior of the old town.
These activities don't depend on museum tickets or restaurant openings.
Lunch: make a deliberate choice
Either prepare lunch with food purchased beforehand or reserve a restaurant specifically confirmed as open on 1 January.
Don't assume that a restaurant offering a New Year's Eve gala also serves lunch the following day.
Afternoon: leave room for something special
Menton has a tradition of New Year's Day concerts at Palais de l'Europe.
For example, the previous 2025/26 programme included a concert at 5 p.m. on 1 January 2026.
However, the 2027 edition has not yet been confirmed.
Check the city calendar if you'd like to attend.
Otherwise, enjoy a gentle promenade, a café if open or a quiet afternoon at the apartment.
Evening: keep it simple
After a late New Year's Eve, a relaxed dinner at home may be exactly what you want.
Make use of leftovers, fresh produce and a simple pasta dish.
There's no obligation to spend the first day of the year travelling around the Riviera.

10. A three-night New Year's stay in Menton
A short holiday centred on New Year's Eve works particularly well with an apartment.
Three nights give you enough time to prepare, celebrate and recover without spending most of the trip packing.
30 December: arrive and settle in
Check into your accommodation.
Walk around the neighbourhood, locate the nearest supermarket and buy most of your festive supplies.
If you've reserved a restaurant for the following evening, reconfirm your booking.
Enjoy a relaxed dinner.
31 December: explore and celebrate
Spend the morning at the market or walking along the waterfront.
Have lunch without rushing.
Use the afternoon to rest, prepare dinner or get ready for your restaurant reservation.
Celebrate in Menton, with the possibility of a short walk near midnight.
Return on foot if practical.
1 January: a slow Riviera day
Sleep in.
Enjoy breakfast at home.
Take a seafront walk and, if available, attend a confirmed New Year's Day cultural event.
Keep meals uncomplicated.
2 January: one more morning
Enjoy a bakery breakfast if your chosen establishment is open.
Take a final walk or short excursion before departure.
Three nights allow the celebration to become part of a holiday rather than a logistical operation lasting only a few hours.
11. Four nights if you want more of the Riviera
If you can extend your stay, arrive on 29 December and leave on 2 January, or arrive on 30 December and depart on 3 January.
An additional night creates room for a proper day trip.
You might visit Monaco during daylight, explore Nice or spend more time discovering Menton's old town.
The advantage is that you don't have to combine sightseeing, shopping and a formal dinner on the same day.
For families, the slower schedule can be especially helpful.
And for travellers arriving from farther away, an extra night reduces the pressure of transport delays.
12. How to make the evening memorable without overspending
New Year's Eve can become expensive if every part of the celebration is purchased separately.
A formal restaurant menu, wine pairing, taxis and late-night entertainment can quickly add up.
An apartment-based celebration gives you more control.
You can spend selectively on things that matter to you: excellent local food, a good dessert, perhaps a special bottle or a restaurant lunch earlier in the day.
You don't have to choose between a cheap evening and a luxurious gala.
A mixed approach can work beautifully.
For example, enjoy a restaurant lunch, buy good ingredients for a private dinner and take a short waterfront walk at midnight.
The experience can feel celebratory without requiring a complicated schedule.
13. Checklist: book, buy and verify
Before arriving in Menton
Confirm your accommodation and check-in details.
Decide between restaurant dinner and apartment celebration.
Book a restaurant if needed.
Confirm any deposit or cancellation terms.
Check the kitchen equipment if cooking.
Look for official 2026/27 city events.
Check transport if planning to leave Menton.
On 30 December
Buy the main groceries.
Collect any preordered specialities where applicable.
Confirm restaurant reservations.
Check exceptional store hours.
Save relevant emergency and transport contacts.
On 31 December
Buy fresh bread and remaining essentials early.
Confirm any planned evening event is still operating.
Check weather and road restrictions.
Review the return journey.
Avoid leaving important arrangements until midnight.
For 1 January
Have breakfast and lunch supplies available.
Check whether your preferred restaurant is open.
Verify any museum or concert programme.
Plan an easy alternative if the weather changes.

Three nights is a good starting point. Four nights provide more flexibility for sightseeing and recovering after the celebration.
Final thoughts: make New Year's Eve a holiday, not a transport problem
New Year's Eve in Menton doesn't need to be an enormous organised event to feel special.
A good dinner, a quiet Mediterranean waterfront and a comfortable place to return to can be enough.
For some visitors, the ideal evening will be a restaurant celebration.
For others, it will be a private meal in an apartment, with a short walk before or after midnight.
And for those seeking a larger public event, Monaco offers a promising nearby option, provided the return journey is properly arranged.
Whatever you choose, prepare the practical details early.
Book dinner, buy your groceries, check the official programme and don't assume trains will run after midnight.
Then enjoy the celebration.
One of the nicest things about welcoming the new year in Menton is knowing that the Mediterranean will still be there on the morning of 1 January, waiting for your first walk of the year.
