A morning walk from France to Italy

One of the best things about staying in Menton is not a beach, restaurant or famous landmark. It is the fact that you can leave the apartment, start walking along the seafront and reach another country before the morning is over.

The route is simple: follow the Mediterranean east through the quieter Garavan district, past beaches, palms and sea views, until France quietly becomes Italy.

There is no dramatic checkpoint experience here: normally just a sign, a change of language and a different atmosphere. French becomes Italian, the coffee rhythm changes and the walk suddenly feels like a mini adventure.

This is why the route is so memorable: no car, no train, no ticket and no schedule. Just comfortable shoes and enough time to enjoy the sea.

Just across the border, small local stops serve the kind of espresso that makes the walk feel worthwhile. It is usually richer, stronger and often cheaper than many visitors expect on the Riviera.

Order an espresso or ristretto, sit outside if you can, and watch walkers, cyclists and locals pass by. It is not complicated or touristy; it is a small travel moment that often becomes a favourite memory.

Start from Menton Old Town, Promenade du Soleil or the central seafront. The walk usually takes about 45-60 minutes each way depending on pace and pauses. Difficulty is easy, but bring water, comfortable shoes and sun protection.

Morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable times. Carry ID for cross-border travel, even though Schengen checks are not normally part of this walk.

Monaco is famous, Nice is busy and Cannes is glamorous. Menton offers something quieter: wake up in France, drink morning coffee in Italy and return to the sea before lunch.

Sometimes the best Riviera experiences are not the most famous ones. They are the ones that feel impossible until you discover they are only a short walk away.
