Why go in the morning
Halles du Marché is one of the easiest ways to feel Menton waking up: a covered Belle Epoque market filled with fruit, vegetables, citrus products, cheeses, olives, bread and pastries.
It works best as a morning stop, when stalls are full, locals are shopping and you can combine the visit with the old town, Les Rampes Saint-Michel or a few hours at Plage des Sablettes.

When it is open and how it works
The market usually runs in the morning, with most activity from around 8:00 to 12:30, and is often liveliest from Tuesday to Saturday. Hours and the number of stalls can change by season and day, so check current information or simply aim to arrive earlier rather than later.
After lunchtime, the hall becomes much quieter and some stands close completely. From central Menton and the seafront, you can walk here in a few minutes, then continue on foot towards the old town or the old port.
If you arrive by car, nearby streets and underground car parks may offer paid parking, but morning spaces can fill quickly on market days and in summer.

What to buy and where to look inside the market

What to buy and where to look inside the market
Halles du Marché is compact, so you do not need a complicated map. Make one slow lap first, then return to the stalls that look most active, seasonal and useful for your plan.
For socca, barbajuans, pichade and pissaladière, look for prepared-food counters around the Halles and just outside the covered market. Chez Mimi is a useful name to know for Menton and Riviera savoury bites, but go early because the best items are morning food.
For fresh fruit, vegetables and Menton lemons, choose producer-style stalls with seasonal displays rather than tourist packaging. In winter and spring, ask specifically for local citrus; in summer, build a simple lunch around tomatoes, peaches, apricots, salad leaves and herbs.
For cheese, charcuterie, olives and tapenade, use the deli-style counters inside the hall. Add good bread from a nearby bakery and you have the easiest apartment lunch: no recipe, no effort, very Menton.
For fish and seafood, go early and ask what is best today rather than arriving with a fixed idea. This is most useful if your apartment has a kitchen and you are comfortable cooking simply with olive oil, lemon and herbs.
For lemon sweets, jams and citrus gifts, use the market as a starting point, then continue into the nearby old-town streets. Maison Herbin on Rue du Vieux Collège is one of Menton's best-known names for artisanal jams and citrus products.

What to taste on the spot

What to taste on the spot
If you are hungry, treat the market as your first small meal of the day. Buy one or two slices of pichade or pissaladière, a portion of socca if it is hot, and a few barbajuans, then eat them just outside the hall or on a nearby bench.
For something sweet, add a pastry, a piece of fougasse or a citrus tart from a bakery counter. For drinks, look for fresh juice, coffee from nearby cafes or bottled citrus syrups and juices to take away.

Picnics and simple apartment meals

Picnics and simple apartment meals
One advantage of staying in an apartment is being able to use the market as your fridge. Bring a small reusable bag and think in simple combinations: bread, cheese, charcuterie, olives, cherry tomatoes, fruit and one or two lemon-based products make an easy lunch or dinner.
You can bring everything back to the apartment, or assemble a picnic and walk a few minutes to the seafront or Plage des Sablettes. This can be more flexible than a restaurant, especially with children or when you want to keep the day light.

Small hacks for a better visit
Arrive before 10:00 if you want the best choice and a calmer atmosphere, especially on Saturdays and in high season. Do one quick lap first, then return to the stalls that appeal to you instead of buying everything at the first counter.
If you are unsure what to choose, ask vendors what is local, homemade or from Menton today. For longer walks or beach hours afterwards, prioritise food that travels well: bread, fruit, nuts and sweets rather than delicate fresh cheeses or meats.
