Start early
Menton is made for summer: bright mornings, long Mediterranean evenings, beaches below the promenade and cafes facing the sea. During a heatwave, the best way to enjoy it is to adjust your rhythm.
The most comfortable hours are usually before 10:00. Walk along Promenade du Soleil, continue toward Plage des Sablettes, stop for coffee near the old town, visit the market before lunchtime and return before the hottest hours.
- If you stay near the seafront, this morning plan works without a car.

Choose beaches that make cooling down easy
Not all beaches feel the same during extreme heat. For hot days, choose places where you can easily reach shade, water, cafes or your apartment.
Plage des Sablettes is useful for families and morning swims because it is close to the old town, cafes and the seafront. Plage du Casino works for quick central swims, Plage du Fossan suits shorter beach breaks near the port, and the Garavan side is good for quieter mornings and sea-view walks.
- Best for families: Plage des Sablettes.
- Best for quick central swims: Plage du Casino and the promenade beaches.
- Best near the old town and port: Plage du Fossan.
- Best for quieter sea views: Rondelli and the Garavan side.

Avoid the old town climb at midday
Menton's old town is beautiful, but it climbs. Les Rampes Saint-Michel, the basilica area and the Cimetière du Vieux Château give some of the best views in town, but they involve stairs and elevation.
On a very hot day, go before 9:30 or after 18:00. Take water, wear comfortable shoes and avoid making this the middle of the day plan during a heatwave.

Use the market and indoor stops
Halles du Marché is a useful morning stop on a hot day. It is covered, central and close to the old town and seafront, so you can pick up fruit, water, picnic ingredients or something light before the hottest part of the day.
If the heat becomes too much, plan an indoor cultural pause at Musée Jean Cocteau - Le Bastion near the old port. Published opening details can change, so check the current schedule before you go.

Visit gardens in the morning
Menton's gardens are one of the town's great pleasures, but on very hot days they should be planned carefully. Go early or later in the day, bring water and avoid uphill garden visits during the hottest hours.
Jardin Botanique Val Rahmeh is lush and useful for a quieter morning near Garavan. Jardin Serre de la Madone sits higher above town and is better treated as a planned outing, not a casual midday walk.

Make your apartment part of the cooling plan
During a real heatwave, your apartment is not just where you sleep. It becomes part of the day plan.
All Azur Menton apartments are equipped with air conditioning, which is especially useful in July, August and during unusually hot periods.
A good hot-day rhythm is simple: morning walk, market or beach; midday rest with shutters closed; late afternoon museum, shaded garden or short swim; evening promenade, dinner or sunset walk.
Save longer trips for cooler hours
On very hot days, avoid overloading the schedule. Monaco, Nice, Ventimiglia and hill villages are possible from Menton, but transport, walking and waiting in the sun can quickly become tiring.
If you do take a day trip, leave early, check train times in advance, carry water and plan one main activity rather than five.
Return to the seafront in the evening
Evening is when Menton comes alive again. After 18:00, the seafront becomes more comfortable, the light is softer and the town feels relaxed rather than intense.
Good evening ideas include Promenade du Soleil, Plage des Sablettes, a slow climb toward Rampes Saint-Michel, drinks near the beach, a balcony with sea view or watching the colour change over the Mediterranean.

Heatwave safety basics
During extreme heat, keep the day simple. French public guidance recommends staying cool, drinking water regularly, avoiding alcohol, limiting physical activity, eating light meals, closing shutters and windows during the hottest hours, and checking on vulnerable people.
If someone feels unwell, confused, unusually tired, dizzy or shows signs of heatstroke, call emergency services. If you are unsure which number to call in an emergency, 112 is the safest option.
- 15 - SAMU / medical emergency
- 112 - European emergency number
- 18 - firefighters
- 17 - police
A simple hot-day itinerary
If the forecast is very hot, keep your day light and local: 7:30 seafront walk, 8:30 coffee and market, 10:00 beach time, 12:30 return to the apartment, 16:30 indoor or shaded activity, 19:00 promenade and dinner, 21:00 balcony, drinks or sunset walk.
Menton is still beautiful in the heat, but it rewards a slower rhythm: walk early, swim before the beach gets too hot, rest in the middle of the day, use the sea breeze in the evening and choose shaded places, indoor pauses and air-conditioned accommodation.
