A short story of the old town

Menton's old town is compact, colourful and easy to explore on foot: Baroque churches, stepped streets, small shops and plenty of lemon-themed souvenirs.

The historic centre grew on a hill above the sea, once protected by walls and dominated by Basilica Saint-Michel-Archange. Its Baroque bell tower still acts as one of Menton's landmarks, reached from the seafront via Les Rampes Saint-Michel.

Today the old town is a lived-in neighbourhood of narrow lanes, tall facades and shaded passages running down towards the market and the sea.

What to see as you walk

A simple route starts from the seafront, climbs Les Rampes Saint-Michel, pauses on the basilica square, then continues higher to the Cimetière du Vieux Château.

On the square, notice the patterned pebble pavement, the church facade and the neighbouring Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs. If the basilica is open, step inside for its Baroque interior and quiet, subdued light.

From the cemetery above, views open over the harbour, the curve of the bay, Cap Martin and the hills near the Italian border. On the way down, wander through side streets for arches, old walls, laundry on balconies, potted plants and everyday life at doorways.

Food stops and emblematic places

The old town is one of the easiest areas to try Menton specialities casually. Around Halles du Marché and the nearby streets, look for bakeries and snack counters selling pichade, pissaladière and barbajuans to eat between sights.

For something sweet, look for lemon tarts, cakes and sometimes fougasse mentonnaise, a soft festive bread with candied fruit and orange blossom. Jam-makers such as Maison Herbin, close to the old town, specialise in citrus marmalades and traditional recipes; check current opening before planning around a specific shop.

Pedestrian streets also have cafes and small restaurants where you can stop for coffee, a glass of wine or a simple lunch between walks.

Souvenir and lemon shops

If you want souvenirs that feel local rather than generic, focus on food and citrus products. In the pedestrian area, shops such as Au Pays du Citron specialise in Menton lemon products: limoncello, citrus wines, marmalades, olive oils, mustards, sweets and gift sets.

Selections and tastings change, so treat these shops as flexible stops rather than fixed appointments. Smaller delis and épiceries may also carry regional olive oils, tapenades, herbs and biscuits from Provence and Liguria.

For non-food souvenirs, look for prints, ceramics and textiles with Menton or citrus motifs: they are easier to pack than fragile decorations and often feel more personal than standard magnets.

Practical tips for enjoying the old town

The old town is best visited on foot and slowly: there are many steps, but the distances are short. Comfortable shoes help on cobbles and staircases.

In summer, mornings and late afternoons are usually more comfortable than midday, both for heat and for photography. It is easy to combine an old-town loop with the market in the morning or a swim at Plage des Sablettes afterwards.

If you are staying nearby, return at different times of day: once for quieter streets and viewpoints, once in the evening when the facades are lit and the cafes below the old town become busier.
